Harmony - Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov. 162 x 90 cm

Returning from France, Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov creates his own world in paintings, full of romanticism and charm of the past years. Dreams of beauty are reflected in this genre scene.

Quiet summer evening. The high sky is gradually changing its color: smoky blue, pale lilac colors merge with the coral reflections of the setting sun. A layer of low, dense clouds swirling, leaving behind distant hills. Large pink and white clouds rise above them, their soft glow highlighted by blue shadows. Behind the dense dark green bushes, almost black, ash-gray walls and a dull reddish-brown roof of the estate are visible.

A group of people gathered on the green lawn. Two young fragile girls are sitting next to each other, dressed in light, magnificent dresses with soft folds on the back. Their shoulders are slightly lowered, dark brown hair, laid in smooth hairstyles, emphasize the graceful line of the neck and the warm color of golden skin.

One of them turned to her friend, on her gentle, inspired face, a dreamy expression. They carefully and spellbound listen to the young gentleman standing in front of them. Leaning on a cane with his right hand, in his left he holds a volume of poems, which he recites with inspiration, covering his eyes. He is all in the grip of poetry. The bluish-purple color of the satin outfit, snow-white stockings and lace shirts give it an image of romance.

Behind him, on the very edge of a wooden bench, is an elderly woman in a scarf and a warm sweater. Tired of folding her hands on her knees, listening to poetic lines, she thinks of something of her own.

Soft, calm colors create a sense of peace. Muted blues, blues, greens, and grays blend harmoniously with warm browns, creams, and pinks. The artist’s strokes are subject to a certain rhythm: they smoothly follow the bends of clouds and folds on clothes, overlap each other, creating a volume of foliage of trees, wriggling along with grass, giving rise to a feeling of a quiet breeze.

At dusk, everything seems a little unrealistic. Slightly blurry contours, the glare of the setting sun and subtle whitish shadows give the picture a touch of sadness.
