Fruit saleswoman - Bartolome Esteban Murillo. 76 x 61 cm

Small artist genre paintings from a completely different perspective reveal his multifaceted talent. On them you will not find either richly dressed Spanish grandees, or spiritualized and exalted images of biblical characters or Christian saints. On these canvases, all attention is paid to ordinary people from the people - poor urban and rural residents. Very often, the painter draws children, boys who run along the streets in tattered rags, or such young toilers, like the girl depicted on the canvas, is still a child.

She is wearing very simple, obviously homespun and dyed artisanal clothes, but clean and neat. She is not used to such close attention and bashfully covers her face with the corner of her head scarf. The girl has a simple linen shirt without decorations and embroidery, a dark corsage and a fluffy terracotta skirt, lying in beautiful large folds. This is a typical Spanish woman “from the people” - dark-eyed and dark-haired, with large expressive, but not refined, not aristocratic features. In her hands is a basket of fresh fruits, which she brought to the bazaar to sell, helping her family get out of poverty.

The picture clearly felt the love and sympathy with which the artist belonged to ordinary people of their people, especially to children. On the canvas, every smear literally breathes love and a passionate desire to hold back so quickly leaving youth and carelessness so quickly.
