The arrest of the propagandist is Ilya Efimovich Repin. 38.4 x 54.6 cm
This is one of the most famous paintings of the artist. At that time it was a hot topic, and Repin could not pass by it. The country was experiencing a surge of social activity, the rise of the revolutionary movement, which was accompanied by numerous acts of violence.
The picture shows the moment when the propagandist was exposed and convicted of illegal activities. The action takes place in a simple peasant's hut with squalid wooden floors in crevices and cracks, with bare unsightly walls. Against the background of general grayness and gloom, the scarlet shirt of the arrested person shines with a bright flame - this is the emotional center of the picture.
The composition of the picture was decided by groups, where the main element is the main character himself and the people who hold him. The corner of the picture is occupied by large figures in the foreground - an elderly gendarme reading one of the leaflets of the propagandist, and a young gentleman with a mustache leaning over him. Behind their backs, a door to another room is visible, where people indignant and shouting excitedly shouting.
The figures in the background are simple peasants in rough, skimpy clothes. They look warily in different directions, trying to understand the meaning of what is happening. In the foreground, attention is drawn to an open suitcase with scattered content - the main evidence against the propagandist.
The painting is mainly painted in dark, inexpressive colors, exceptions are only two pure color spots - the red shirt of the central hero and the blue cover of the opened suitcase. This technique involuntarily forces to be fixed on these colors, emphasizing their importance.
The canvas is made in the manner typical of Repin - part of it is spelled out very carefully, with the smallest details, such as floorboards, a suitcase with papers, the figure of a gendarme sitting on a chair and the person next to him. All other characters are expressive and noticeable, however, they are written in a different manner - with broad, effective strokes, almost sketchy. This adds liveliness to the picture, gives movement, special energy.
